Mascot is pleased to welcome Sandra Ono to participate in a month long residency, where she will continue the work and research from her time spent at Minnesota Street Project as the 2016/17 TOSA Award recipient.Ono’s recent work investigates and honors the life and untimely death of her namesake: activist and nurse, Sandra Neely Smith, one of five people murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan and American Nazi party during the Greensboro Massacre in 1979. Ono grew up learning about Smith from her father, who spent time in Greensboro as an attorney working against the Klan and the American Nazi Party.Working with denim, Ono’s materials reference both the textile mill where Smith was an active union organizer, and the durable, protective nature that denim possesses. Through her intimate deconstruction and reconstruction of materials, Ono’s work considers human resilience and fortitude.
Sandra Ono (b. in Los Angeles, lives and works in the Bay Area) received her MFA from Mills College. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout Northern California as well as in Texas, New York, San Diego and New Jersey. She has completed residencies at Headlands Center for the Arts, Minnesota Street Project, University of Texas at Dallas, Kala Art Institute, Southern Exposure, and Vermont Studio Center.
